Recovery: Where Will the Jobs Come From?
The good news is that the downward momentum of the Great Recession is subsiding. The financial panic that seized the global capital markets has eased. CEOs are no longer acting as if depression looms.

That said, the consensus forecast is for the economy to emerge slowly out of the downturn. The recovery won't feel much like one, and that's bad news for a labor market where 6.5 million jobs have been lost since the recession began. With the unemployment rate climbing toward double digits, it isn't only Republican lawmakers who are wondering "where are the jobs?" "It's always the case that in the depths of the recession it's hard to say where the jobs will come from," says Barry Bosworth, economist at the Brookings Institution.
So, where will the jobs come from?

Starting Fresh With an Unpaid Internship
Three months after getting laid off from a small visual-effects company in February, Beki Gibney started working again-as an unpaid intern. "It feels weird being an intern at my age after five years of working," says Ms. Gibney, 28 years old. "It takes a stab at my pride some days."

Internships-temporary positions that pay little or no salary-are typically designed for college students or recent graduates exploring potential career paths. But with unemployment at 9.5%, some older laid-off workers are taking on these stints to stay busy, gain new skills and expand their networks. In the meantime, they continue to job hunt and, in some cases, collect unemployment benefits. http://www.thecorporateplaybook.com/huddle/index.php?tid=524

College football powers move to limit eBay-bound autographs
Fan-appreciation days that include autograph sessions have become such a popular marketing event for college football programs that several prominent schools now limit what fans may offer up to players to sign.

Defending national champion Florida will hold its annual fan day Aug. 16 and expects up to 5,000 Gators supporters to meet with players at the basketball arena. Fans will be given a team poster to be autographed but will not be allowed to bring in outside items, a practice the school has followed for almost a decade.

"Fans used to bring in all sorts of stuff to be signed, from balls to helmets and jerseys. The next day it would appear for sale on eBay," said Jamie McCloskey, Florida's senior associate athletics director for compliance. "We've had fans complain, and for good reasons, but entrepreneurs were abusing the opportunity."
